12.  How Is It? - Notes and Lyrics

How Is It? is a rather light-hearted tune, and you can even hear a smile in the voice as the question is asked, “How is it you did not know that you had taken my heart?” As the legacy of folk songs shows, it has always seemed incredible that one could be so in love, yet the object of that affection remains oblivious. In How Is It? , I must admit that I do employ a bit of the bard's weapon, satire, to the story – which shows that one should not be careless about breaking a bard's heart!  Hint: the lines of the verses are arranged purposely...

A post-note:  It all came out fine in the end, though.... one bit of sadness led ultimately to finding the love of mylife... but the other guy still was something of a cad!

Lyrics

Oh, how is it you did not know from the very start?

Oh, how is it you did not know that you had taken my heart?

Day and night I stayed with you.

I gave you songs to sing, I

Cherished every moment that

Kept me beneath your wing.

Oh, how is it you did not know from the very start?

Oh, how is it you did not know that you had taken my heart?

Dancing 'round my willing heart,

I thought I saw you smile

Creating here a growing hope

Kindling there love's fire!

Oh, how is it you did not know from the very start?

Oh, how is it you did not know that you had taken my heart?

Dreams of you still make me smile

I think they always will, but its

Chasing wishful fantasies, I

Know it cannot be real!

Oh, how is it you did not know from the very start?

Oh, how is it you did not know that you had taken my heart?
